Middletown Babe Ruth (MBR) kicked off our Fall Season with our Big Field Transition Skills Clinic this morning at Berkeley Peckham Field. Several players were there to get a head start on their baseball careers.
Coach Condry welcomed Middletown High School Baseball Coach, Chuck Paiva, as our special guest. Mr. Paiva welcomed all of the players to the Middletown Baseball Program which begins here. He stressed to the players that knowing the game and the fundamentals that go along with it, is very important. Listen to your coaches and enjoy the experience.
MBR coaches Tim Sullivan and Pat Walker were on hand along with Coach Dylan Smith. Dylan was gracious enough to stop by and demonstrate the pitcher's responsibilities in Babe Ruth. We discussed baserunning, taking leads and what to look for when on the bases. We stressed a few things, mainly how important it is to hit the cut-off at this level and to take ground balls in the infield off the grass to get a good bounce and allow you to get set before you make a strong throw.
Dylan hit a few rounds of ground balls to everyone and then we took 2 rounds of batting practice. Coach Sullivan, clearly not in mid-season form, threw to the first couple of batters and ran out of gas. Dylan came on in relief. The kids got quite a few swings and hit well.
Dylan is heading off to play baseball at Franklin Pierce. We wish him the best of luck!
We'll see you guys next Saturday, for the MBR annual Fall Baseball Program Scrimmage.
